For those of you who have self-discipline and have no trouble in staying organized/focused, bah humbug, this post isn’t for you. I’m just kidding… maybe. Being organized and staying focused are traits that are not organic to me. In fact, I have a million redundant practices that I have in place to keep me on the straight and narrow. And for 3 easy payments of $4.99 you too can.. errr… wait, that’s not supposed to go there. Without further ado, here’s how I keep my crazy butt in line.
1. Manifest Journal
Last year I met my neighbor at a time where I really felt like it was meant to happen. I was having mad anxiety and writer’s block and she gave me some awesome advice including the information to start my own manifest journal. Essentially this journal allows you to write down your goals and dreams to help you work your way to manifesting the things you truly desire. It may seem hippy dippy, but putting your goals and aspirations out there make them tangible for you to seek out and conquer. Well, at least that’s how I see it.
In my bedroom, I have a whiteboard on which I map out my day as soon as I wake up. I color coordinate my day by the following categories: Blue=Personal life to do tasks, Red= Important Tasks, Purple=Slavery..err I mean work, and Green=Positive affirmations/quotes.
I put a line through each task and a smiley face. It’s my positive reinforcement to keep me going. I like seeing a bunch of happy faces on my board as it means I kicked the day in the ass! 🙂

3. Editorial Calendar
In order to make sure I keep posting regularly, I’ve made myself create an editorial calendar. It’s a two-piece process. First, I keep a book of topics I think about writing; it’s like a journal for my neurosis, really, lol! You see, my creative process is interesting, to say the least. I come up with random stuff at random times, so I find it best to jot things down as they come. Second, I take those ideas and create a skeletal outline to help me scale out the idea and bring it to life. The goal is to have several articles prewritten and ready for scheduled publication. Let’s just say I’m still a work in progress… 😉
In short, this is how I keep myself from being a disorganized anxious ball of worry. It’s like my 3 branches of government; they all check and balance each other. I’ve found that the more organized I become, the less stressed out/freaked out I am. Trust me, disorganized neurotic Taryn is no fun. Picture a Tasmanian Devil running around creating havoc all over the place. That is my brain when I’m unorganized.

I am a Type A organized person by nature, but when deadlines pile up I find that I have trouble keeping track as well. I’m also pretty OCD so I have not one, but two Moleskines.
One is an agenda- pretty straightforward. I like to keep daily to-do’s in there and bring it around with me. One is just a blank notebook that I’ve had for 2 years and running, where I jot down weekly to-do’s (and then use the agenda to break them down into days… yeah I know, I’m insane), ideas, goals, dreams, pretty much whatever I want. It’s like my creative territory.
And of course, I use Google Calendar so i can keep track of where I’m supposed to be each day.
Staying organized is never an easy task, but luckily we’ve found tools to help us succeed 🙂

Yes, someone who gets it! Those are all really awesome techniques. It helps me tremendously to have different methods of organization. Glad I’m not the only one 🙂
