Taryn tries Keto

So yesterday was my birthday. I turned 29. I was going to write about it (and will, probably tomorrow) but I feel like a total POS because I spent the last few days off of Keto and I’m miserable!!!!!

It started with a trainer

A few months back, I decided to not only get a gym membership but to also get a personal trainer. After all, I was staring down being in two weddings six weeks of each other, a girl’s gotta look good. Anyway, my trainer (who I absolutely adore and miss terribly) made me switch my dietary habits and told me to try Keto. I’m not going to get into the specifics of Keto, but it’s basically a low carb, moderate protein, and high-fat diet. I was skeptical and annoyed about how expensive and mindful my shopping had become, but I’d be lying if I didn’t see how much of a difference it did for me mentally.

My brain with superpowers

The biggest change (well one of them) for me was my brain processing/mental state– whatever you want to call it. My ability to focus, power through mundane tasks, and just my overall emotional resilience went THROUGH THE ROOF! At my pique performance, I was going to the gym 5-6 times a week, eating a Keto diet, and just loving life. Like seriously, I HATE administrative/repetitive tasks, but I found myself not only being more productive, I didn’t mind as much. I could go on and on about how my diet also improved my gym recovery, etc, but for the sake of this post, I’ll stick with my brain. Anywho, fast forward to this past week. I decided to “treat” myself and ate all kinds of tasty and horrible food.

Hello darkness, my old friend

When I ditch my Keto diet and eat crappy food, I AM SO MISERABLE AND DEPRESSED, it’s not even funny!!! You’re probably thinking, “Taryn, c’mon, it’s not the food.” Oh, but it is! When I eat poorly, I’m sluggish, foggy, cranky, and just downright depressed. Fortunately, I’m very cognizant of my mood and the causes of my changes in behavior. I am glad that I’ll be fine in a day or two, but man it is gnarly how food can really alter your mindset.

You are what you eat

I’m not advocating that everyone go on Keto– it depends on a few factors. That said, the difference of cutting out sugar, bad carbs, and processed foods is astounding! Do I miss bread? Sure. BUT, I LOVE how I feel when I eat healthily and exercise on a regular basis. It’s worth cutting out the crappy stuff, hands down. Anyway, that’s the end of my dietary rant. I will be back to normal in a day or two.

Abbey and the Loaf of Bread

There are many philosophies on how to house your dog whilst you are away. I suppose it’s like those moms who believe their way of parenting is the best way to parent.

“To crate or not to crate, that is the question.”

On topics such as those I often take a lackadaisical approach to “soap box” parents; dog parents too.

How NOT to Behave on Valentine’s Day

I think I may be one of those rare “single people” who don’t mind Valentine’s Day. In fact, not only do I not mind, I have an annual tradition set in place since I was 17 years old! It started one fine Valentine’s Day back in 2007 (Yikes I’m getting older O.o). My friends and I were in the local grocery store, walking in like a badass posse strutting our independence because we drove ourselves in my Mom’s Mini-Van. I rocked the shit out of that van back in the day.

My friends and I had planned on going back to my house and baking a crap ton of delicious treats while watching a movie. As we were getting ready to leave the grocery store, I happened upon a rack of movies. It was there that I found THE Valentine’s Day movie of a lifetime. I picked up The Departed and thought to myself “I have no clue what this movie is about, but for the sake of looking cool, I’m going to go with this one.” Yes friends, I picked a violent Boston mob film to watch on Valentine’s Day. The ridiculous part was, that it went well! I thoroughly enjoyed the film, as did my friends. Thus a tradition was born.

Fast forward 4 years, and I found myself carrying out my beloved tradition at college in Flagstaff. I invited my friends over for dinner, treats, and a super badass film. I was particularly excited because a certain someone I may or may not have had a crush on was going to be in attendance. Again, I stress the may or may not. It was one of those situations where you aren’t terribly too sure, or at the very least you didn’t want anyone to really know about it. So naturally I did the “deny deny deny” charade for some time.

As I was preparing the food and getting ready for my friends to arrive, I felt a sudden twinge of anxiety and nervousness. I began to feel pretty anxious about all of these people coming over. So naturally, like any smart 21 year old, I decided to drink the anxiety away. After all, what’s the harm in getting a little buzz on before company arrives? Of course, my intelligent, self had not eaten in quite some time, so let’s just say the booze did it’s job.

I “came alive” as my friends piled into my house. It was quite a good sized group, so I was pretty happy with the turnout. Drinks were pouring, people were eating, then all of a sudden, he showed up. Zack entered the room casually late with desserts in hand. I think one of the things I admired most about him was his thoughtfulness. So my buzzed (errr, drunk) ass goes over to greet and look over the tasty treats he’s provided.

I must preface this by saying I am a closeted picky eater. Seriously, there are only two pies that I like: apple and cherry. So looking at his selection, to my horror, Zack had purchased a peach pie. I hate peach pie. Of course, I had planned on doing the nice mature thing by saying “thank you” but my drunk brain had something else in mind. Staring down at the pie I thought to myself “Great he brought peach pie, because I f*cking hate it”. All of a sudden I hear several gasps and the room got quiet. To my shock and horror, what I “thought” I had said to myself, I actually ended up saying out loud. I looked up and surveyed the room to see the stunned faces looking at me. Zack’s face was bright red as I tried to fumble through a terrible retraction/apology.

Fortunately for me, he was pretty gracious about the whole thing and decided to tease me about for some time, and it later became the joke amongst our group. Later that year I made a peach pie for his birthday as a peace offering. As the hostess with the mostest, I proceeded to shove peach pie down everyone’s throats as a sign of solidarity. Needless to say, that was the first dessert finished that night. Even after my little debacle, it was still a great night.

Well folks, that’s how not to behave on Valentine’s Day. Here are a few key takeaways that I hope you’ve gotten from my awesome little blunder

  1. Don’t drink on an empty stomach
  2. Make sure you’re actually thinking in your head and not out loud
  3. When someone hands you a gift just say “thank you” and shut up

I hope everyone had a swell Valentine’s day!

5 Recipes I am Dying to Try.

I love to cook. When I was 16, I tore my ACL and LCL playing basketball and was sidelined indefinitely. To pass the newly acquired time I had on my hands, I picked up cooking. Getting in the kitchen and experimenting with herbs, meats, veggies, and spices is something I enjoy immensely. I find it incredibly therapeutic. Granted I haven’t really been in the cooking spirit as of late, I have plans to change that soon!

I stumbled upon Forksoverknives and am obsessed with their recipes. I highly recommend checking out their site. They advocate for having a plant-based diet to help with many illnesses like heart disease. Though I really dig what they’re about, I don’t think I can give up meat forever (sorry cows, chickens, etc. you’re just too damn yummy). That said, I do want to incorporate more plant-based dishes into my repertoire.

Also,  I’ve finally checked out my Pinterest (there were cobwebs from all the inactivity) and have spotted some really tasty recipes that I can’t wait to test out in the kitchen. So without further ado, here are 5 things I’ve found on the interwebs that I’m going to try and whip up.

Ok, just writing about this stuff is making me incredibly hungry! So these are a few of the things I am going to try. Hopefully if I don’t make too much of a mess of things, I’ll share with you guys how it all turns out. In the the spirit of the first day of fall, what are some of your go-to recipes? Let me know in the comments! 🙂

Getting Colorful in the Kitchen

After having the best vegan wrap in the world a few days ago (Fresh Mama in Vegas, check them out!), today I made it my mission to try and create my own at home. I used 2 collard green leaves, yellow squash, zucchini, red onion, red bell pepper, yellow bell pepper, 1 tbs of mediterranean humus, and a bit of pico de gallo. It was very simple and not too time consuming. I must confess my “julienning” skills leave a lot to be desired. In fact I cut my finger in the process. Sharp objects should never be in my vicinity. I even commissioned the help of my niece and nephew (6&7) who were surprisingly excited about our little culinary adventure. In my opinion they turned out quite well! After it was prepared and all was said and done, it turns out the kiddos just liked “helping” and weren’t terribly thrilled with the outcome. They love their veggies and fruits, but I don’t think they’re ready to go all in just yet. Oh well, more for me. :-). Also any recipes would be greatly appreciated!
